Most people are good candidates for teeth whitening, which is a good thing as your smile is one of your most pervasive features. Unfortunately, over time, the aging process and consuming certain foods or drinks can darken and stain your teeth. The stains are even worse if you regularly drink coffee, tea, or cola or happen to smoke.
Two Types of Whitening Systems
In order to regain the beauty of naturally white teeth, whitening is often recommended. This type of process is less invasive than resorting to the use of dental crowns or veneers. You can choose from two kinds of whitening systems. One treatment is offered chair-side in the dental office, or you can use a take-home whitening system. If you select the chair-side treatment, you can expect to see immediate and noticeable results.
Since teeth whitening is not damaging to the teeth, it does not lead to any major side effects. Therefore, the surface of the teeth are not affected during the whitening process. However, some patients may experience some sensitivity after a procedure.
Are You a Suitable Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
If you want to learn more about teeth whitening in Singapore, you first need to make sure you are a suitable candidate. You should reconsider whitening if you have any of the following applies to you:
- Multiple cavities
- Active gum disease
- Severe erosion or attrition, or enamel hypoplasia
- You are pregnant or nursing
How Chairside Whitening Is Performed
If none of the factors on the above list concern you, you may want to look further into chairside whitening. This type of whitening process is performed, as noted, in a dental office. One session takes about 60 to 90 minutes. The protocol involves using a blue wavelength type light to activate a bleaching gel of hydrogen peroxide. When this is done, free oxygen radicals are produced. The oxygen radicals access the enamel and whiten any stained or darkened surfaces.
When this process is performed, the dentist will first cover your gums and lips, leaving the teeth exposed. Next, the gel is applied before being activated by the blue light. During the treatment, you can sit back and relax, watch a movie, or listen to music. When the process is over, you will be greeted with a whiter and brighter smile.
A Safe Procedure
The substance contains 25% hydrogen peroxide, which is neutralised by a pH that supports the natural pH of your teeth’s enamel. A lamp is used that shines the blue light on your teeth for activation. Virtually no heat is emitted, nor are any harmful UV rays used during the whitening process.
If you opt to have you teeth whitened at home, the dentist will first take impressions so appliances can be made. These appliances resemble a retainer and are called whitening trays. Once the trays are made, you will be given instructions on wearing the trays and using the whitening gel at home. You will also be given a desensitising toothpaste for use during the treatment period.
Either method can be considered. What you choose will be based on your individual preferences as well as the amount you can afford to pay.
